As many rulers do, when they want to secure their rule, King Olaf Tryggvason of Norway sought a wife. But of course, the Christian King could not just have any woman - only the finest would do, for a man draped in such riches and favored by the Western God.

Perhaps unaware of the dangers in doing so, Olaf pursues Sigrid the Haughty. She is a woman of prowess and power, with a sadistic side that has cost the life of many. Legend goes that she invited all her suitors to a banquet, left the building, and ordered his soldiers to burn it to the ground, trapping all those who wished to marry her inside as they burned.

Olaf soon makes a tragic mistake in the courtship of Sigrid in revealing his faith. As a Christian, he insists that she must convert as well, if they are to be wed. Sigrid, with her firm belief in the Old Gods, refuses.

At this rebuke, Olaf is offended, and strikes her across the face with a glove. It is said that Sigrid calmly replied, and told the King of Norway that his action will lead to his death in due time.

Indeed, how right she was...
